Ignoring the nerd/geek debate, I have always considered myself a nerd at heart. I grew up in an era where computers and technology were magical things that provided an escape to a new world. I didn’t always understand them, but they were an outlet for my curiosity. I learned to take them apart and put them back together. Most of the time they worked when I was done. I explored the software systems used to secure them and continuously learned as I broke things and was forced to fix it.
Now, I have been working in enterprise IT for over 25 years. I’ve done my time as a technician, sysadmin, network engineer, project manager and manager. I’ve work on a mainframe and worked in the cloud. I’ve supported dial-up to 25+ terabit optical rings. I have authored and learned first hand the importance of a good disaster recovery plan. I have spent multiple sleepless nights on the phone with Microsoft support. I remember the big switch to ATM networking and the switch back a few years later. Token Ring and LocalTalk have all been a part of my vocabulary over the years. Despite it all, I still love technology.
I still get excited by new technology. I love talking about it and sharing what I know with others. Just don’t ask me to work on your computer. This is my outlet. This is where I share the things that I think are cool in hopes that another nerd might find my ramblings interesting or inspiring enough to try something new or fun. This is where you will find my projects and passions as well as an occasional travel blog. This isn’t for you as much as it is an outlet for me, but hopefully you will find it at least entertaining even if it’s not always helpful.
